5 Most Likely Marcus Mariota Replacements as Jalen Hurts' Backup
4. Joshua Dobbs
I have Josh Dobbs relatively low on this list because it's so hard to figure out what's going to happen with him this offseason. It was such a rollercoaster in 2023.
Over the summer, he looked like one of the NFL's premier backups when he signed a sizable contract with the Cleveland Browns. Then he was traded in favor of a fifth-round rookie. Then he was the Arizona Cardinals' starting quarterback, and the team went 1-7 under his leadership. Then he went to the Vikings and put together a heroic and headline-making run. Then the wheels totally fell off.
If Dobbs' season had ended after his third game in Minnesota, he may well be looking at starting quarterback money. Now it's hard to imagine he gets another starting job, but he might get another "top-end backup" type contract,
Looking at his season holistically, Dobbs' 79.5 passer rating or 59.9 passing grade from Pro Football Focus highlight that you don't want him starting for you. But those aren't terrible numbers considering what he had to work with all year, and he also graded out incredibly well (82.2) as a rusher.
Dobbs might be outside of the Eagles' budget for the backup QB spot, but they should certainly at least give his agent a call to see what the asking price is.
