The Philadelphia Phillies are heading back to the MLB postseason for the third-straight season after clinching a playoff berth on Friday night against the New York Mets.

For the Phillies, they’ve been one of the best teams in baseball this season and are poised to make another deep postseason run. However, before the MLB playoffs begin, the Phillies will have one more home series in the regular season against the Chicago Cubs this week.

Most players on the Phillies’ roster will be back next season. But there are a few players, who might not be playing in Citizens Bank Park in 2025.

For a team that has had a good amount of success over the last few years, we know that the Phillies front office won’t wait to make the necessary changes to stay competitive and be one of the best teams in baseball.

With this in mind, let’s discuss the three players who might not wear the red pinstripes in the City of Brotherly Love next season.

Spencer Turnbull

The 31-year-old Turnbull was one of the more interesting storylines to follow coming out of spring training as he pitched well enough to join the starting rotation in place of a then-injured Taijuan Walker.

Turnbull was excellent as the Phillies’ fifth starter in April as he was 2-0 with a 1.67 ERA. The former Tigers pitcher only gave up 17 hits, six earned runs (three home runs), and posted 36 strikeouts in six starts.

The veteran’s performance gave the Phillies a lot to think about heading into May as many fans thought he should’ve been the fifth starter over Walker. However, Turnbull moved to the bullpen and things started to get rocky.

The right-handed pitcher had an ERA of 7.00 in May but rebounded nicely in June with a 2.08 ERA. But the 32-year-old Turnbull was placed on the 15-day injured list with a lat strain. That injury has forced the veteran pitcher to miss several weeks of action.

He has yet to return to the big league club and it is hard to imagine him having a huge role in the MLB playoffs, given the success of other relievers in the bullpen. However, based on his small success, the Phillies could bring him back on another short deal in the offseason.

At the same time, the Phillies might feel as if Andrew Painter, who has missed the entire season with Tommy John surgery, could be ready for that fifth spot in 2025. If that’s the case, there will be no room for Turnbull or Walker on the Phils’ pitching staff.
