3 Offseason Mistakes Already Costing the Eagles
By Randy Gurzi
Monday night was one to forget for the Philadelphia Eagles. They held a late lead but gave the Atlanta Falcons too much time after an unforgivable decision to throw the ball against a defense with no timeouts.
That predictably led to a comeback drive for Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons and a 1-1 start for the Eagles.
It's a long season, so there's no need to panic but it's clear after two games that this team is dealing with the same issues they had in 2023. That's what makes these three costly offseason mistakes stand out.
3. Thinking Vic Fangio Would Fix the Defense
Vic Fangio has had some success in the NFL but if we're being honest, he's living off reputation more than results at this point.
Sure, he had the No. 8 defense in terms of yards surrendered in 2021 while serving as the head coach of the Denver Broncos, but that team wasn't good. They were 7-10 and he was fired after the season. He then got another chance as the defensive coordinator in Miami, and was 10th in yards but 22nd in points surrendered.
That's closer to his norm as he has finished in the 20s or lower in points surrendered nine times in his career. Still, he's living off the success he had with the San Francisco 49ers and his first two seasons in Chicago, rather than his recent performance.
After two games, Fangio hasn't helped improve the Eagles at all as they're currently 30th in yards and 27th in points. They even had arguably the worst scheme ever when trying to stop the Atlanta Falcons at the end of their Monday Night Football loss.
Maybe he turns it around, but right now, this move looks rough.
