3 Eagles Who Won't Survive the Preseason
By Randy Gurzi
1. Albert Okwuegbunam Jr., Tight End
Tight end depth was a concern for the Eagles in 2023. As good as Dallas Goedert has been as the starter, the players behind him haven't offered much in the way of receiving. The primary reserves last year were Grant Calcaterra and Jack Stoll. Calcaterra returns but Stoll is now with the New York Giants.
Also back is Albert Okwuegbunam, Jr. who didn't record a catch in 2023 after hardly seeing the field. C.J. Uzomah replaces Stoll and now the only question is how many will make the 53-man roster. If the answer is three, then Okwuegbunam isn't going to make the cut. In fact, he might not make it even if they go to four players after a frustrating outing on Friday.
Okwuegbunam had one catch for six yards on three targets. He struggled throughout the night and the assessment of Okwuegbunam from Geoffrey Knox of Inside the Iggles might seem a bit harsh, but it says all you need to know about the tight end's chances of making the team.
"Well... Albert O didn't do that. He looked slow, and three of the passes thrown in his direction fell harmlessly to the turf. Yeah, this guy can't play," Knox said.
Making matters worse for Okwuegbunam was the play of Calcaterra. He saw two passes come his way, catching both for 14 yards. He didn't stand out as a dominant player but he did what he was supposed to do, meaning he should have the TE3 spot locked up.
