3 Eagles Who Will Be Replaced on Day 2 of the NFL Draft
By Randy Gurzi
1. Kenneth Gainwell, Running Back
The Eagles made a splash this offseason when they signed Saquon Barkley to a three-year, $37.75 million deal. The former No. 2 overall pick spent the past six seasons with the New York Giants and racked up 5,211 yards on the ground with 2,100 yards through the air on 288 receptions. Barkley averaged 4.9 yards per touch and had 47 total touchdowns, but the Eagles believe he can be even better for them since he now has much more talent around him.
Barkley has always been able to rack up yardage but he's also struggled with durability. He played in every game as a rookie but has missed at least one game in every year since. In all, he's missed 25 games — although he's been more durable over the past two seasons with 30 games played.
Still, the Eagles are likely going to need to turn to their backup at some point which is currently Kenneth Gainwell. The fourth-year pro has 895 yards and a healthy average of 4.4 per rush with 12 career touchdowns. He's not bad by any means but with him entering the final year of his rookie deal, there's a good chance the Eagles use a pick on Day 2 to bring in a running back who can push him for his spot.
At pick No. 50 or No. 53, the Eagles might be able to land Trey Benson from Florida State or Jaylen Wright from Tennessee. They could also look to drop down and take someone such as Blake Corum from Michigan to bolster their backfield.
