Britain Covey

The 27-year-old wide receiver and punt returner's roster spot was most likely safe even before the preseason game. He was the NFL's punt return yards leader last season, after all.

There were, however, some questions about his role after the reinstatement of cornerback Isaiah Rodgers and the Eagles drafting three rookies with return experience in college. An excellent return specialist in his own regard, Rodgers potentially had a chance to take over those duties while Cooper DeJean, Will Shipley, and Ainias Smith were all good returners in college. Would these additions put Covey's roster spot in jeopardy?

Covey showed on Friday night that wasn't happening. The 5'8 return man had an impressive 26-yard run in the first half, breaking multiple tackles on his way to the Eagles' 37. He was unusually involved in the passing game as well, finishing the game with four catches and 25 yards.

Strictly special teams players can have less job security than other positions. In fact, Covey was waived by the Eagles prior to the 2023 regular season but was re-signed to the practice squad. The Eagles can't afford to take that risk with one of the best punt returners in the league this time around.
