3 Eagles on Thin Ice Heading Into Week 2
By Randy Gurzi
2. Jordan Davis, DT
We could go with both Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter here, which is what Geoffrey Knox of Inside the Iggles did when addressing areas of needed improvement for the Eagles. Knox stated that the two massive defensive tackles have everything needed to be stars but the problem comes back to motivation and conditioning.
”Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis are just as scary without their pads on as they are when they're wearing them. There's potential for some game-breaking play here. Potential didn't lead to any pop in Week 1. They were among the lowest-rated Eagles defenders per Pro Football Focus. Both were first-round draft picks, so Philly is expecting a lot. These two are going to have long careers here, but both have seen their conditioning and motivation questioned. If Vic Fangio is the genius everyone keeps giving him credit for being, we need him to motivate these guys and flip their 'on' switch.” — Knox, Inside the Iggles
While Knox did address both players, Davis has to be the larger concern. Added at No. 13 overall during the 2022 NFL Draft, Davis was supposed to help them transition from Fletcher Cox. He’s now entering year three and has yet to prove he can be a reliable starter.
A massive human being at 6-foot-6 and 336 pounds, he had 45 tackles and 2.5 sacks last year. That gave the coaching staff confidence following a forgettable rookie campaign. But a goose egg on the stat sheet in Week 1 isn’t what they expected this year.
