2. John Ross, WR

One of the other veterans hoping to claim the third wide receiver spot was John Ross. Once a top-10 NFL draft pick, the speedster struggled to stay on the field early on in his career, which caused him to ultimately decide on an early retirement.

However, Ross kept the door open for a return to the league, and the Eagles took a chance on him this offseason with their WR3 up for grabs.

It was always a longshot that Ross would outright win the job, especially given his long layoff from NFL action. He's had his moments during camp, but it's never been consistent enough to ever seriously see him as a starter on this Philadelphia offense.

With Dotston now on board, Ross becomes dead weight like Campbell. The former is already approaching 29 years old, and it's tough to say if he'll ever suit up in an NFL game again. Considering the Eagles are transitioning from an older core to a new gen, Ross would be taking reps away from younger players whose development is simply more important.

While Ross does have an incredible story and his comeback attempt is admirable, a contender like Philadelphia can't afford to waste roster spots going into the regular season. Each guy taking on a depth role must be relied upon whenever a need arises, and given Ross' lack of availability throughout his career, it doesn't make sense to take that risk after this experiment hasn't exactly paid off.
