10 Eagles Who Will Be Cut By Tuesday's Roster Deadline
By Joe Summers
3. Albert Okwuegbunam Jr., TE
Long an interesting prospect given his six-foot-five stature and impressive speed, Okwuegbunam is a fascinating high-upside player whose inconsistency has proven to be his downfall thus far in the NFL. He appeared in four games for the Eagles last season, failing to haul in his only target.
The Eagles have kept four tight ends in the past but opened the 2023 campaign with just three and another on the practice squad. That feels like Okwuegbunam's most likely outcome, as he's been working behind Grant Calcaterra and E.J. Jenkins throughout training camp with Dallas Goedert locked in as the incumbent starter.
Okwuegbunam was taken in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft after an impressive college career as a Missouri Tiger. A three-year starter, Okwuegbunam had a remarkable 23 TDs as one of the nation's best red-zone threats prior to joining the professional ranks.
With only 546 career receiving yards in the league, Okwuegbunam's best role likely comes purely in the red zone. He does have four TDs, though inconsistent blocking and route-running have made it difficult to find snaps for him.
While it's not probable that Okwuegbunam makes the final 53-man roster, he could be a coveted waiver wire add given that red-zone prowess. Given Goedert's injury history, the Eagles would be wise to keep Okwuegbunam on the practice squad should the opportunity present itself.
