The Philadelphia Phillies continue to chase the New York Mets to regain control of the National League. While the Braves continue to stumble, the division has been a surprise two-team race in the first weeks of the season. A shocking aspect of this is how great Philly's starting pitching has been aside from Aaron Nola. While the offense has clear areas of concern. These offensive inconsistencies have included a player supposed to be the face of the franchise.

Bryce Harper is far too accomplished and proven to panic over the lack of production. However, there is no denying Harper hasn't been up to his typically elite standards. Harper has watched as his average has fallen back towards the Mendoza line and seems to be struggling in situations the infielder typically thrives in.

Bryce Harper's Struggles Have Impacted Philly in a Tight National League East Race

If the Phillies are going to overtake the Mets in the division, it is going to take Harper living up to lofty expectations. Fair or not, this is the burden of a franchise star who is being paid top dollar for much of the next decade.

There is some reason for encouragement with Harper showing recent signs of life in a clutch situation. This is the version of Harper Philly fans have been spoiled to watching. The veteran first baseman has been putting up solid power numbers as well, suggesting it is just a matter of time until the average and clutch production begins to return to career norms.

However, Philly fans aren't known for their patience, and anything short of the National League East lead isn't going to be considered acceptable. With this in mind, Harper needs a strong finish to May and to continue to heat up as we move into the summer.

For Philly, even if Bryce Harper does return to career norms, there is a clear need for improvement. Catching the Mets and competing with the top teams in the National League demands that the Phillies look to the trade market and in their system for potential upgrades.

Bench depth and an impactful outfield addition should be the team's focus over the next weeks of the season. None of this matters, however, if Bryce Harper cannot show noticeable improvement in the weeks to come.
