The Philadelphia Phillies' 2025 outfield has been consistently underwhelming when it comes to production at the plate. Brandon Marsh and Max Kepler have both been wildly inconsistent, demanding the Phillies search for potential upgrades. While adding another struggling outfielder isn't terribly enticing, it could be the right move to boost Philly's World Series hopes. Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. is an obvious potential trade target.
Robert Jr. recently noted his own offensive struggles, offering a frustrated sentiment, "I don't think anybody is going to take a chance on me." This was in reference to being moved ahead of the trade deadline. Despite failing to reach the Mendoza line, the power and potential value of the White Sox outfielder is far too enticing for Philly not to consider making the move.
Luis Robert Jr.'s Slump is the Perfect Buy-Low Chance for the Philadelphia Phillies
Bringing in a struggling outfielder to offset your own team's issues could be viewed as an odd strategy. However, none of Philly's current options offer the potential ceiling of Luis Robert Jr. There is reason to believe a simple change of scenery could push the slugger back to form and give the Phillies outfield a much-needed boost.
Not only this, but the Phillies would be buying in on Luis Robert Jr. at the outfielder's lowest value. It gives the team a chance at a potential steal with control over the next two seasons. If the offensive numbers don't drastically improve, you can easily pivot and move in a different direction. Robert's 2026 and 2027 seasons are both controlled by team options.
This gives Philly all of the power in the trade, paying a rental price for a player that could be an important piece of the offense for the next three seasons. No matter which direction the franchise chooses, it is clear that changes must be made. To continue to hold off Atlanta and to have a chance of chasing down New York, this team needs reinforcements.
While the bullpen is understandably getting the bulk of the attention in potential trade rumors, Philly's outfield shouldn't be forgotten. Luis Robert Jr. is the perfect chance to buy low on a player who has the ability to change Philly's season.
