They say defense wins championships and that was certainly true on Sunday night as the Philadelphia Eagles toppled the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 to win the second Super Bowl in franchise history.

Patrick Mahomes was under constant duress and had one of the worst games of his career, taking six sacks while throwing two first-half interceptions. The Eagles' defense routinely gave the offense great field position, helping Jalen Hurts score three TDs en route to Super Bowl MVP honors.

These players deserve a ton of credit, though so does defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, whose excellent plan kept Andy Reid's offense stagnant the entire night. It was such an impressive performance, in fact, that Nick Sirianni made a bold proclamation to the media following the win.

Nick Sirianni Calls Vic Fangio Best Defensive Coordinator Ever

"I think he cemented his legacy as the best defensive coordinator of all time," Sirianni said about Fangio. He joined the NFL in 1986, though this is the veteran coach's first Super Bowl ring and he certainly earned it. The Chiefs may have put up yardage and some points late in the contest, but by then, Fangio's defense had already all but sealed the victory.

Fangio came over from the Miami Dolphins and completely transformed the Eagles in just his first year. After ranking 25th in opponent yards per play (5.5) last season, Philadelphia led the league by surrendering only 4.8 yards per play this year. Defensive additions like Zack Baun, Cooper DeJean, and Quinyon Mitchell certainly helped, yet it was still Fangio pulling the strings and making timely calls.

It might be too early to call Fangio the best defensive coordinator ever. Even still, he's building an impressive case for himself. Winning a Super Bowl was one of the final things he needed to accomplish, so Fangio's resume is essentially bulletproof now.

With Kellen Moore off to the New Orleans Saints, the Eagles will experience more coaching turnover just like they did in 2024. Fangio is expected to stick around though, continuing to build on the excellent foundation he's created.

This is a thrilling day for Eagles fans. Fangio helped bring the city of Philadelphia a championship, and the organization helped fulfill a lifelong dream he's carried with him throughout his many stops in the league.
