New DeVonta Smith Update Complicates Potential Week 6 Return
The Philadelphia Eagles are fresh off their bye week. Even though it's early on in the season, it came at a great time for the Birds.
They lost two of their last three outings but were also dealing with some injuries. A.J. Brown has been rehabbing a hamstring injury while DeVonta Smith suffered a concussion in Week 3 against the New Orleans Saints.
Although there's some belief that both Brown and Smith would return to action in Week 6, Smith still has another hurdle to clear.
Eagles News: Devonta Smith Still in Concussion Protocol
Per Zach Berman, Smith is still in the concussion protocol. It doesn't mean that he's ruled out for the week but still needs to take some steps to get cleared.
Thankfully, it's only Wednesday and the expectation is that he'll be cleared by Sunday. The Eagles need the Alabama product back out there.
The offense looked vastly different without Smith, Brown, and Lane Johnson in the Week 4 loss to New Orleans. Smith is a crafty route runner who has the foot quickness and secure hands to be a consistent playmaker.
This year, he has 21 catches (28 targets) for 239 yards and one touchdown. In all three games thus far, he's secured seven catches with at least 75 receiving yards.
Getting Smith back out there would be a massive boost. Especially since the Browns are currently eighth in pass defense (184.4).
The pressure is on the Eagles to beat a Cleveland team that is 1-4 and has looked terrible through five games. Hopefully, they get Smith back and get back into the win column.
