There have been consistent questions around the potential return of Philadelphia Eagles rookie tackle Myles Hinton. The offensive lineman was drafted 191st overall in April, making it clear that expectations were always checked for his development, especially after his 21-day practice window to return from his back injury last month. Unfortunately, it looks like any potential progress won't be put on display until 2026.
On Thursday, The Athletic's Zach Berman reported that Hinton will remain on the injured reserve for the rest of the 2025 campaign.
It makes sense at this point in the season not to attempt to create a 53-man roster spot for a wildcard of a rookie. Only four games are remaining on the schedule, and each is vital to Philly's playoff hopes. Much has been made of the offensive struggles and questions around quarterback Jalen Hurts, but adding a wildcard to your offensive line depth isn't helping matters.
Opting to give Hinton a full offseason to get healthy and for Philadelphia to evaluate his potential future is the best scenario for both sides. Jordan Mailata is locked in at left tackle, and Lane Johnson is soon expected back to solidify the right tackle position. With this in mind, Fred Johnson will be the swing tackle with the franchise using its interior lineman and practice squad options for further depth on the outside.
Myles Hinton's NFL Career on Pause Until 2026
For Eagles fans, it is a bit frustrating to still have no idea exactly what you might have in the rookie tackle. However, it is easy to understand why decision-makers aren't anxious to create an additional roster spot for a late-round draft pick who is far from proven.
This hands the Eagles a potential wildcard contributor heading into the 2026 season, when the offensive line depth will be very much in question. Fred Johnson is poised to hit free agency, and the Eagles are projected to have only $22.4 million in cap space, according to Spotrac. This makes it clear that the franchise will not be spending top dollar on a backup option.
With this in mind, there is still a path for Hinton to make the roster in the 2026 season if he is able to impress throughout camp and into the preseason. It will be an uphill battle, but the spot does appear to be up for grabs, and Hinton has the advantage of being a draft pick that offers a bit more patience and interest from Philadelphia decision-makers.
While this doesn't lessen the blow of what equates to a wasted pick for the 2025 season, it does offer a path forward. Hopefully, Hinton will find his way to being a key part of the Eagles' offensive line next season.
