One of the cap space sacrifices the Philadelphia Eagles had to make during the 2025 offseason was parting ways with offensive tackle Mekhi Becton. After rehabbing his image and contributing to a Super Bowl run, the offensive lineman landed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. So far, that contract has aged incredibly poorly, with Becton playing far below league average, opening the door for a quick exit from the franchise.

While injuries will prevent the team from parting ways with Becton this season, an offseason release of the lineman appears extremely likely. Host of the Guilty as Charged podcast, Steven Haglund, noted just how increasingly difficult it was getting to picture the tackle being brought back for the 2026 season. This is also driven home by the fact that Becton is scheduled to be a $12.5 million cap hit next season compared to a $2.5 million dead cap hit if cut, with these numbers coming courtesy of Spotrac.

Becton is quickly running out of time to change minds in Los Angeles and perhaps is providing the Eagles with a surprise opportunity. All of a sudden, the franchise could have the chance to bring back a familiar piece at a surprising discount. Philly could follow a script that has already been written, bringing Becton back in exchange for giving the lineman a chance to rebuild value.

Eagles Could be Gifted Surprise Chance to Reunite with Mekhi Becton

The need for this has been recently driven home by the fact that the Eagles have consistently faced offensive line injuries throughout the 2025 season. A portion of this is likely due to the incredible physicality that remains focused on short-yardage plays and using linemen as human weapons in the Tush-Push; having mounting injuries among the position group shouldn't come as a surprise.

However, there is no denying just how incredibly effective this has been over the last two years. The Eagles have been the league's best team during that stretch and appear to, yet again, be the class of the NFC. As long as the current core remains intact, it makes sense to bring back Becton next season on a deal that allows the lineman to repeat history.

From Becton's perspective, it makes sense if he's released to sign a bargain deal with a team with which he enjoyed the best stretch of his career. Going back to Philly is both about embracing a known fit to help rebuild Becton's value and set himself up to cash in on free agency yet again when the time comes.

No question, it is a great fit for the Eagles and would give the team a proven Super Bowl winner who can help stabilize a major question mark moving forward. If the Chargers do turn the page on Becton and release him this offseason, Philadelphia would make as much sense as a landing spot for the veteran as anywhere in the NFL.
