The Los Angeles Chargers' season has come to an end, and while the same can be said of the Philadelphia Eagles, this might actually be a good thing for Howie Roseman's team. Jim Harbaugh's team's loss to the New England Patriots may have sealed Mekhi Becton's fate with the Chargers, thus setting the table for a potential reunion in the City of Brotherly Love.
The former Super Bowl champion didn't look comfortable with his new team this season. And, according to Chargers insider Kris Rhim of ESPN, it may have had everything to do with Greg Roman. At this point, Becton won't be back, from the sound of it, if they keep their offensive coordinator.
Mekhi Becton's Words on Greg Roman Pave The Way For Philly Reunion
Rhim shared the full transcript of the back and forth between himself and Becton. To put it bluntly, the offensive lineman doesn't seem to have much desire to run it back in Los Angeles for a second season, given the lack of enthusiasm in these replies.
"Mekhi Becton said he was uncomfortable playing in offensive coordinator Greg Roman’s system this season: 'It’s a lot of different things I’m not used to.'
Q: Do you feel like you got comfortable with those things over time?
'No.'
Q: Have you talked about improving that next year?
'No We haven't talked about it. We didn't talk about it after the game, so I don't know,'” Rhim wrote.
Coach Harbaugh didn't want to make any commitments when asked about Roman's future with the team after such a disappointing ending to the season. Then again, they go a long way back, so it sounds more likely that he will give him another chance.
Becton signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Chargers in the offseason, but he has struggled mightily to adapt to life outside of Philly. The lineman has been a talking point for all the wrong reasons this year, even being benched multiple times.
The Chargers would take a $2.5 million cap hit by parting ways with him in the offseason, so it's hard to believe they will even consider bringing him back. That's where the Eagles shouldn't hesitate to make a run at him again.
The former New York Jet was instrumental to the running game in the Super Bowl-winning season. The offense as a whole regressed under offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, but getting Becton's massive frame back in Philadelphia can certainly help Saquon Barkley establish the run again.
Becton has struggled for all of his teams, except for the Eagles. He would also probably welcome the chance to get back to the team that finally brought the best out of him. And with Philadelphia looking to regain its dominance in the trenches, getting him back on the team should be a no-brainer decision if he's available.
