Josh Sweat Explains Off-Field Move That's Worrying Eagles Fans
The football world is buzzing with Super Bowl 59 just days away. The Philadelphia Eagles will be challenging for the Lombardi Trophy for the second time in three postseasons when they collide with the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans on Sunday.
Even though the majority of Eagles fans are focused on the championship showdown, others are already thinking about the NFL offseason. The Super Bowl will likely mark the last time several players don a Philadelphia player — including Josh Sweat, who will become a free agent in March.
Sweat ruffled some feathers earlier this week when he revealed he's hired world-class agents Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha. With fans worried that he's gearing up to leave town, the veteran defender has since shared the reasoning behind the off-field move.
Eagles News: Josh Sweat Eyeing Major Offseason Payday
As Chiefs and Eagles players spoke to the media on Tuesday, Sweat told Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane that the magnitude of the upcoming free agency period led to his changing agents.
"It's the biggest moment of my life," Sweat said.
Sweat, 27, is looking for a major pay bump after playing on a one-year, $10 million contract this season. The former Pro Bowl pass disruptor was one of the Eagles' best defenders during the regular season, racking up 27 solo tackles, eight sacks, and a pair of broken-up passes while playing to a 71.0 defense grade on Pro Football Focus — 34th-best among 119 eligible exterior defenders.
After contributing to this season's defensive success, Eagles fans would love to see the former Florida State Seminole re-signed in March. Unfortunately, a return to Philadelphia is far from guaranteed now that Sweat has made it clear he isn't fully committed to the City of Brotherly Love.
"I just love football, to be real with you. I just want to play football," Sweat said about his offseason plans, per The Wrightway Sports Network's Daniel Alameda. "I love the (Eagles), I love my time here. It is what it is but I'm just here to play football, honestly."
According to his agency's website, Rosenhaus and his partners have "negotiated over 1,100 contracts worth more than $8 billion." In other words, Sweat is likely looking to land the biggest contract of his career and could opt to go to the highest bidder rather than focusing on roster fit.
A potential Super Bowl victory this weekend would likely see his asking price skyrocket even more.
Even though their focus is on the Super Bowl, the Eagles still have just over a month to work out a new deal with Sweat. The 2025 NFL free agency period officially begins on Wednesday, March 12.
