Philadelphia Eagles fans don't need much background into the animosity between the team and former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. He took a "tampering" call from the Arizona Cardinals during a failed Eagles playoff run, and after Philly's elimination refused to take any ownership over things.
You would think, with two full seasons under his belt in Arizona, Gannon would have dropped all the nonsense and would have a lot of love for an Eagles organization that helped advance his career so much.
Instead, he took another chance to try sticking it to the Eagles this week. Despite his connections with the Eagles, Gannon's Cardinals voted in favor of the failed motion to ban the Tush Push.
Jonathan Gannon Votes Against Eagles
Now, this isn't directly a head coach's decision, but consider that Nick Sirianni publicly put his faith in former coaches from the Eagles' staff earlier in the offseason. And owners, of course, are going to give a lot of weight to their head coach's opinion when it comes to an on-field rule change.
Sirianni's comments also make it clear that he expected coaches to impact the voting, having specifically mentioned expecting Gannon, Kellen Moore and Shane Steichen to vote against the ban. After all, the franchise that vaulted them all to their new high-profile roles was the one being targeted by the ridiculous motion.
Gannon's lack of loyalty, thankfully, wasn't enough to swing the vote. But Eagles fans aren't quick to forget, and this isn't going to do him any favors with a city that once held him in high regard. Fans will be looking for revenge. But Gannon's probably not even going to do well enough to make that a possibility.
Eagles Unlikely to Get a Shot at Revenge Against Cardinals in 2025
The Eagles and Cardinals don't face off on the 2025 schedule, and they also won't even be meeting in the preseason. That means a potential playoff matchup is the only way Sirianni could get back at his disciple this season.
The Eagles will hold up their end in making that possible, no doubt, but will the Cardinals? After going 8-9 last year, FanDuel Sportsbook has the Cardinals as sizable -168 favorites to miss the playoffs next season.
Philly lost its first meeting with Gannon's Cardinals back in 2023, but there's no doubting who the better team is right now, or who would be the likely winner if they met this season.
Luckily, even if there's no postseason showdown between the two sides, the Eagles' 2026 schedule includes a tour against the NFC West, meaning the Eagles and Cardinals will face off in the regular season. Of course, this will only be a revenge game if Gannon can keep his job with another year of missing the playoffs in Arizona.
