Jalen Hurts had a defining moment when the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday night. After falling to the Chiefs two years before, Hurts avenged that loss and walked out of New Orleans as the Super Bowl MVP while cementing his legacy as the Eagles’ franchise quarterback.
The response to Hurts’s win has been positive with many noting his adversity dating back to when he was benched for Tua Tagovailoa in the 2017 College Football Playoff Championship Game at Alabama. But while many have given Hurts his flowers, his former quarterback coach was a little salty and showed his bitterness on social media on Sunday night.
Quincy Avery Shows Bitterness Over Jalen Hurts’ Success on Social Media
Hurts worked with Quincy Avery since he was a teenager and the quarterback guru helped him develop into a franchise quarterback with the Eagles. While they had a long-standing relationship, Hurts fired him this past offseason and went on to throw for a career high 68.7% completion rate with 2,903 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2024.
The 26-year-old took his game to another level in the playoffs, completing 71.4% of his passes while throwing for 726 yards, five touchdowns and an interception. The turnaround wasn’t lost on football fans and they trolled Avery by suggesting he was coaching Patrick Mahomes. In response, the embattled quarterback coach made a reference to his bank account.

For what it’s worth, Adams commended Hurts’s improvement in an article by Andscape’s William C. Rhoden. But Hurts isn’t the only quarterback that has struggled under his guidance.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson not only works with Avery but co-hosts the “QB Unplugged” podcast with him. Watson came to Cleveland as a franchise quarterback in 2022 but has completed 61.2% of his passes for 3,365 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions over the past three seasons.
Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud also started working with Avery when he was 17 years old. While Stroud had a standout collegiate career at Ohio State and was the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, many have criticized Avery as he regressed during his second season in Houston.
While Avery has gotten both quarterbacks into the NFL, it’s not hard to see Hurts’ improvement after cutting ties this season. With Hurts sky-high on the Eagles future, there’s a greater chance he could reach another level this offseason as the Eagles will look to defend their title in 2025.
