The Philadelphia Eagles are off and running with training camp, hoping to continue their sustained success as betting favorites to win the NFC once again. After hoisting a Lombardi Trophy last year, fans are understandably dreaming of a repeat.
Stellar play in the trenches was the driving force behind the success, as Philadelphia built perhaps both the best offensive and defensive line in the entire NFL. They've seen some turnover there in recent years, yet expectations remain sky-high for each group.
We've seen a lot of linemen come and go over the years, and now one former Eagles starter has just suddenly announced his retirement during camp.

Former Eagles Starting G Nate Herbig Announces NFL Retirement
Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn told reporters on Tuesday that veteran guard Nate Herbig was retiring from the league. He was on a one-year deal after missing the 2024 season with injury, though now is hanging up his cleats.
Originally an undrafted free agent out of Stanford, Herbig signed with the Eagles and was with the organization from 2019 to 2021. He started 17 games at right guard during his tenure, getting waived after the 2021 campaign. After playing for both the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers, Herbig dealt with injuries and then signed with the Commanders.
At only 27 years old, Herbig's retirement is a bit unexpected. It's possible that the lingering effects from his torn rotator cuff and limited playing opportunities accelerated the decision, though this was still an experienced player with 30 starts under his belt. He was projected to serve as Nick Allegretti's primary backup at left guard, so now Washington will need to add depth along the line to make up for the loss.
The Commanders burst onto the scene with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, ultimately falling short against the Eagles in the NFC title game. Washington should be competitive once again, though there's no question that Philadelphia remains the truly elite team in the conference. The Eagles' ferocious defensive line terrorized offenses, meaning every piece of depth in the trenches matters. Even though it's not a major loss, the Commanders are thinner now, suggesting they're worse off.
Of course, the Eagles have issues of their own to deal with at camp. They're still operating from a position of strength, however, and should expect to be in a position to make the Super Bowl once again. With an excellent foundation in place on both sides of the ball, fans can reasonably expect to keep battling for championships for years to come.
Herbig won't be part of the future, yet he still played a role in establishing this great era of football. Here's wishing him the best as he pursues a new career and puts the NFL behind him.
