The Philadelphia Eagles have had a number of noteworthy backups over the last handful of seasons. Most notably, this includes Jalen Hurts, who has cemented himself among the league's best starters, playing in two Super Bowls and helping take down the dynastic Kansas City Chiefs. With this in mind, the backup position in Philly has sparked just a bit more interest than usual, dating back to Nick Foles' infamous Super Bowl run.

With this in mind, keeping an eye on former backups is to be expected of Eagles fans. Last year's secondary option has landed in Cleveland with Kenny Pickett among the franchise's five-man race for the position. A season before Pickett, it was Gardner Minshew stepping into this role. Much has been written about the veteran quarterback who remains a bit of a mystery.

Minshew is far too good to be a backup and just not quite consistent enough to hold onto a starting job. This is exactly what the Las Vegas Raiders found out when adding Minshew to be the team's answer a season ago. It ended in frustration with Minshew back on the market as a potential backup. It won't come as a surprise who opted to bring in the veteran.

Former Eagles Quarterback Gardner Minshew Impressing in Early Preseason Action

Minshew joined the Chiefs in the 2025 offseason and made his debut in the first game of the preseason. The veteran completed 6-of-9 passes for 54 yards and looked sharp in his Kansas City debut. It is odd seeing the former Eagle now wearing the colors of a rival. However, it is a solid career move that puts the quarterback close to a great offensive mind.

Having a chance to sit behind Patrick Mahomes and learn Andy Reid's offense is going to continue to help build Minshew's career. While the quarterback's days as a starter are likely over, it seems very probable that another half-decade of being a highly sought-after backup is in his future. If this is the path Minshew chooses, a possible reunion in Philly could make sense as well.

Regardless, Eagles fans are feeling great about Tanner McKee and the current quarterback room. Hurts has every reason to continue to be motivated as the league's most disrespected starter. Only two active quarterbacks have beaten Mahomes in postseason play, and still, Hurts isn't given his due. Free motivation for one of the league's brightest stars and a quarterback room that continues to impress.
