The Philadelphia Eagles are set at the quarterback position for years to come with Jalen Hurts calling the shots in the huddle, but one of the team's starters before Hurts' arrival might not be as lucky this fall.
When you invest a first-round pick in a quarterback, the expectation is that they will hold down that spot for quite some time. While the franchise did win a Super Bowl during his tenure with the team, the Eagles moved on from Carson Wentz shortly thereafter. Since then, he has never found his footing as a starting quarterback elsewhere in the league despite suiting up for four different franchises.
Now, Wentz could be in danger of losing his job again, and, at his age, there are no guarantees that other teams will be interested in adding him to the fold.
Former Eagles QB Carson Wentz on Thin Ice After Offseason Workouts
Wentz has only appeared in 12 games since the end of the 2021 season despite playing for three teams during that period. He will turn 33 years old during the 2025 regular season, and it is hard to argue that his best days aren't long behind him.
After spending the 2024 season as Patrick Mahomes' backup with the Kansas City Chiefs, the franchise signed Gardner Minshew this offseason, and, barring something unexpected happening during training camp, he is expected to hold down that job moving forward.
Wentz remains unsigned with training camps throughout the league rapidly approaching. Without an opportunity to prove himself to a coaching staff somewhere, the former No. 2 overall pick could be a quarterback without a home this fall, as the teams that needed help under center, the Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints, and New York Jets, have seemingly decided on the players they want starting or, in the Saints' case, battling for the job.
Eagles fans will have to wait and see what Wentz's fate is as he is losing opportunities to join a new team with every passing day.
