With OTAs and mandatory minicamp officially in the rearview mirror, the Philadelphia Eagles are preparing to flip the page and get ready for training camp in July.
The defending Super Bowl champs don’t have that many position battles to worry about heading into training camp. However, several players are looking to win a job on the 53-man roster later this summer, including at quarterback.
The Eagles’ quarterback depth chart is set at the top two spots with Jalen Hurts and Tanner McKee, who played well when given the opportunity last season. However, the QB3 job is up for grabs between rookie Kyle McCord and Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
Eagles fans will be watching to see if McCord, who played his high school ball in Philadelphia, can beat out Thompson-Robinson. If Thompson-Robinson loses the battle, he could be joining a few ex-Eagle QBs on the free agent market later this summer.
Ex-Eagles QB Ian Book Among Free Agents Still Waiting to Be Signed Before Training Camp
One of those former Eagles quarterbacks still available in free agency, not named Carson Wentz, is Ian Book.
Book has had an interesting NFL career thus far that has taken him to New Orleans, Kansas City, New England, and Philadelphia twice.
His first stint with the Eagles happened on August 31, 2022, when Philadelphia claimed Book off waivers after the Saints waived him. Book spent the entire season on the active roster, dressing for two games.
Book returned for the following year, but didn’t make the Eagles’ final 53-man roster at the end of the preseason in 2023. From there, Book had a quick stint with the Patriots on their practice squad and went to training camp with the Chiefs last summer.
The former Notre Dame quarterback returned to Philadelphia late last season, as they signed him to the taxi squad on Dec. 24 and elevated him to the active roster on Dec. 28. The Eagles cut ties with Book on January 7. But they re-signed him to the practice squad two days later.
Philly didn’t bring Book back after winning the Super Bowl in February. However, the ex-Eagle did get some free agent interest from the Denver Broncos. The Broncos reportedly brought in Book for a tryout at their rookie minicamp in May.
However, nothing came from the tryout as the Broncos did not sign Book. Now, as we head into July, it’s tough to see Book getting an opportunity, especially with Wentz, Tyler Huntley, and Desmond Ridder still available.
That said, don’t be surprised when the regular season begins and Book’s name starts to pop up in workout circles.
