Former Eagles Coach Fired to Begin 2nd Half of Season
By Jovan Alford
Former Philadelphia Eagles Senior Offensive Assistant Rich Scangarello will be looking for a new job after the Las Vegas Raiders made multiple coaching moves on Sunday after getting blasted by the Cincinnati Bengals 41-24.
On Sunday night, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported that Las Vegas fired Scangarello, offensive lineman coach James Cregg, and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Scangarello was the QB coach for the Raiders.
The Raiders’ quarterback play has been shaky at best this season as Gardner Minshew nor Aidan O’Connell has shown to be the long-term answer under center. Minshew was benched in Sunday's loss and replaced by backup Desmond Ridder.
Before joining the Raiders’ coaching staff, Scangarello returned to the college ranks, where he was the offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky in 2022.
Scangarello spent one season as the quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia under the direction of then-head coach Doug Pederson. The Eagles’ offense struggled mightily that season. They went 4-11-1 and averaged 20.9 points per game (26th in the NFL).
Carson Wentz was the starting quarterback but was benched for rookie Jalen Hurts. Wentz completed 57.4 percent of his passes for 2,620 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions.
Meanwhile, Hurts completed 52 percent of his passes for 1,061 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions. The rookie quarterback also had 354 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
After Philadelphia parted ways with Pederson, Scangarello went to San Francisco, where he became the QB coach with the 49ers in 2021.
