Former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews’ football career could be winding down after he was released by the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, per Joe Person of The Athletic and Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer.

The Panthers signed the 32-year-old Matthews to a reserve/future contract at the end of the 2024 season. Matthews spent the last two seasons in Carolina, where he switched from wide receiver to tight end.

The former Eagle appeared in five games with the Panthers as he spent most of his time on the practice squad. Matthews didn’t register a catch or target in Carolina and hasn’t had a catch in an NFL regular season since 2019, which was his third stint with the Eagles.

Before he joined the Panthers, the 6-foot-3, 212-pound playmaker also spent some time with the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 and 2022. The Eagles took Matthews in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Matthews had a good rookie season with the Birds, recording 67 receptions (103 targets) for 872 yards and eight touchdowns.

The former Day 2 pick followed up his rookie season with a stellar sophomore campaign in 2015, posting 85 receptions (126 targets) for 997 yards and eight touchdowns. Matthews also played well in his third season with the Eagles before the team traded him to the Buffalo Bills ahead of the 2017 season for cornerback Ronald Darby.

Coincidentally, the Eagles won their first Super Bowl in franchise history over the New England Patriots during that season. Matthews appeared in 10 games with the Bills in 2017 before going on injured reserve.

The Bills did not re-sign the former Eagles wideout, who signed with the New England Patriots in the following offseason. However, Matthews was cut during preseason and returned to the Eagles in 2018.

Matthews didn’t significantly impact the Eagles’ offense in 2018 like he did to start his career. Philadelphia released the veteran wideout in November of that season. Matthews split the 2019 season with the Eagles and 49ers.

Given his age and most recent experience with the Panthers, it's hard to see Matthews finding a new opportunity anytime soon. That said, the former Eagle had a solid career that spanned 10 years.
