This offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles made some changes to their cornerback room. Veterans Darius Slay and Avonte Maddox were both released. Slay signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers while Maddox joined the Detroit Lions. That said, following the first few weeks of training camp, one of these former Eagles received praise from their new coach.

According to Al Karsten of PrideOfDetroit, Lions head coach Dan Campbell gave Maddox a strong endorsement following Sunday's practice. Campbell said, " [He's] smart, aware, and understands how to play." He added," [Maddox also] brings versatility — can play nickel, safety, special teams in a pinch, and even corner if needed".

Former Eagle Avonte Maddox Receives Compliment from HC Dan Campbell

Eagles fans may be a little shocked to hear this praise of Maddox. During six seasons in Philly, the 29-year-old was often despised because of his struggles in coverage. Per Pro Football Focus, he earned a coverage grade of 70.0 or higher just twice — in 2021 and 2022. In 2021, he played 481 coverage snaps and earned a 76.2 grade. The following season, he notched a 70.3 grade across 307 coverage snaps.

Maddox was primarily used as an outside corner with the Eagles, but he played in the slot sparingly. Though he did see limited time at safety last year, it was never a major part of his role. That’s what makes Campbell’s comments particularly noteworthy.

The Lions clearly view Maddox as more than just a nickelback. His ability to fill in across the secondary and potentially contribute on special teams makes him an asset in Detroit’s eyes, than he was for the Eagles.

Even though he isn't slotted to be a starter with the Lions, it sounds like Maddox will make the initial 53-man roster at the end of August. If that happens, Eagles fans will laugh at Detroit for keeping a player who wasn't good enough for the defending Super Bowl Champions to keep.
