Former Eagle Made Another Bone-Headed Play in Week 11 for New Team
Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett was under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons in Week 11. Although his Houston Texans notched a 34-10 blowout win over the Dallas Cowboys (much to the delight of Eagles fans), the veteran defender was caught doing something he's known for: bone-headed plays.
As the Cowboys attempted a field goal during the third quarter, Barnett was caught slapping one of the opposing linemen's helmets. The ex-Tennessee product, unsurprisingly, was assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for his blunder.
It wasn't all bad for Barnett, though. The Nashville, TN native finished the Week 11 victory with one tackle, a sack, and even recovered a fumble for a 28-yard touchdown that firmly put the game out of reach.
Eagles fans are more than familiar with how penalty-prone Barnett can be from his seven-year run with the franchise. The former 2017 first-rounder amassed a whopping 28 penalties across his run in Philadelphia, which is more than the number of sacks he had with the franchise (21.5) during that stretch.
The Eagles began to phase Barnett out of their plans last season, opening the door for the Texans to claim him off waivers. He's played well in Houston since the change of scenery, tallying 18 solo tackles, 5.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a disrupted pass in 16 games.
Barnett has found a way to positively impact the gridiron even if his discipline issues tend to land him in hot water. If he can find a way to limit the penalties he takes, the ex-Eagle could play an important role for the Texans down the stretch.
