Former Eagle Informed He's Getting Released Soon by New Team
The 2025 NFL Playoffs is finally about to kick off this weekend, with six games slated to happen from Saturday-Monday.
The Philadelphia Eagles are going to host the Green Bay Packers in a big-time contest on Sunday. 14 teams are competing to raise the Lombardi Trophy next month but the other 18 teams in the league are turning their attention to the offseason.
After making the Super Bowl last season, the San Francisco 49ers went 6-11 and failed to make the playoffs. They are looking to revamp that team and GM John Lynch informed defensive tackle Javon Hargrave that the team will release him when the new league year begins on March 10. However, they are open to bringing him back on a new contract.
Javon Hargrave Will Get Released by 49ers
Hargrave played for the Eagles from 2020-2022. He had 161 total tackles, 24 TFLs, and 23 sacks in his tenure. Following the 2022 season, Hargrave joined the 49ers in free agency on a four-year, $84 million deal that included $40 million guaranteed.
His career with the 49ers started well, logging 44 total tackles, eight TFLs, and seven sacks. Those numbers earned him a Pro Bowl nod but he couldn't continue the positive momentum this season. In the Week 3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, Hargrave suffered a torn biceps and was ruled out for the season.
He finished with seven total tackles and one sack in three games this season. His cap hit for the 2025 season would be just $9.6 million, but for the 2026 season, it would skyrocket to a whopping $47.8 million.
The 49ers don't want to keep a defender who will be 32 years old by the time the 2025 season kicks off on the roster with that type of price tag. Recovering from a torn bicep certainly hurts his case. A reunion to Philly may be in the cards for him in March, but we'll have to see how talks go when the time comes.
