Week 3 of the 2025 NFL preseason is finally here, meaning the Philadelphia Eagles are one step closer to finalizing their initial 53-man roster. This year's cutdown deadline is on Tuesday evening, and Friday's finale with the New York Jets will give veterans and rookies their last chance to impress head coach Nick Sirianni if they want to be a part of a potential Super Bowl repeat.

While rosters don't have to be finalized for another few days, that hasn't stopped NFL teams from beginning to trim the fat. Some players have already worn out their welcome in their respective destinations, including a former Eagles quarterback who was just released two days after finding a new home.

Former Eagles QB Nate Sudfeld Released 2 Days After Joining 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers announced a handful of roster moves on Thursday, including the release of former Eagles quarterback Nate Sudfeld, per Pro Football Talk's Charean Williams. The veteran signal-caller joined the 49ers as a free agent on Tuesday (his second stint with the team) before being released two days later after QB Tanner Mordecai was re-signed.

Being released this close to the regular season isn't fun for any player, but being forced to find a new team isn't anything new for Sudfeld. The ex-Indiana Hoosier has spent time with four franchises since he was drafted 187th overall by the then-Washington Redskins in 2016, including a four-year run with the Eagles — the longest he's lasted with any team.

All of Sudfeld's 37 career passing attempts were done in a Philadelphia jersey, all coming in a reserve role behind the likes of Carson Wentz and Nick Foles. He completed 25 of those passes (67.6%) for 188 passing yards, one touchdown, one interception, and a 77.3 passer rating, with the highlight of his run being the Super Bowl LII ring he received nearly a decade ago.

Sudfeld hasn't taken a regular-season snap since he was with the Detroit Lions in 2022, and time will tell if that'll change before the 2025 campaign is up. Even though he's far from the league's best quarterback, the fact that he continues landing contracts suggests that his off-field presence is good enough to convince teams to roll the dice on him. Sometimes it works out, other times — like this week — it doesn't.

Needless to say, Philly fans will be keeping an eye on Sudfeld to see if he secures a roster spot before the 2025 NFL season begins.
