Much of Philadelphia Eagles fans' attention is understandably going to be on the backup quarterback race after Thursday's preseason debut. Tanner McKee was incredible, fueling the belief that parting ways with Kenny Pickett in favor of the cheaper option was the right decision. Even in meaningless preseason action, it was great to see McKee performing at such a high level. However, that wasn't the case for everyone, with a number of potential cuts emerging after the game.

One that is going overlooked is depth running back and returner Avery Williams. After spending the first part of his career with the Atlanta Falcons, the veteran signed with the Eagles as a potential returner. This is where he debuted on Thursday and was wildly outplayed by Ainias Smith and Keilan Robinson.

The Eagles were given a glimpse that Williams isn't needed when it comes to holding a roster spot just as a returner. The veteran started his career as a corner before converting to a special teams contributor and running back option. Williams brings value in his ability to play three different positions in a pinch. However, with the level of depth that the Eagles bring this far from secures a roster spot.

Eagles New Addition Avery Williams' Roster Spot in Major Trouble

Thursday night's game showed that the Eagles can have a returner with higher upside at other positions. Williams is only going to be used as a corner or in the secondary in an absolute doomsday scenario. The same can be said behind Saquon Barkley, who has two exciting backup options already locked into place.

Williams is only going to make this roster if he proves his value as a returner. This got off to a rocky start with Williams being outperformed both in the kick and punt game. The Eagles have to be seriously considering if it would be better served to keep a younger development project and turn the page on Williams. It won't be costly when it comes to cap space, and it gives the roster far more upside.

This is the goal, which makes the roster as flexible as possible and gives you a chance to find surprise contributors if injury strikes. Williams doesn't excite fans or leave any reason to believe things are going to improve after last year's regression in Atlanta.

Philly must consider turning the page and continuing to focus its recent shift on using depth spots for youth, with the expectation that this will eventually develop into a meaningful contender. All adding up to Williams being on the hot seat.
