Eagles Wasted Huge Opportunity by Not Trading Defender They're Phasing Out
By Cem Yolbulan
The Philadelphia Eagles remained unusually quiet during the NFL trade deadline, opting to enter the second half of the season with the same roster. Perhaps that is not a bad idea for a 6-2 team with an excellent opportunity to win the NFC East.
GM Howie Roseman was uncharacteristically inactive before Tuesday's deadline. While most Eagles fans had assumed that there wouldn't be a blockbuster trade, one deal some had anticipated was about Bryce Huff. After seeing only six snaps in Week 9, Huff was seen as a potential trade chip but the Eagles decided to retain him for the second half of the season.
This is a disappointing development for the Eagles that they could soon regret. Huff was a major free-agent acquisition this offseason but has failed to live up to the hype.
Even though head coach Nick Sirianni said that Huff was injured against the Jaguars, leading to his season-low snap count, the 26-year-old's role has diminished consistently over the past couple of weeks.
The Eagles signed Huff to a three-year, $51 million deal in the offseason. He was seen as the ideal replacement for veteran pass rusher Haason Reddick, but Huff has been nowhere near that level thus far. He has 1.5 sacks, one tackle for loss, and three QB hits in eight games.
Huff would cost the Eagles $29.6 million in dead money if he is cut in the 2025 offseason. That doesn't seem like a real possibility. Therefore, there is a chance the Eagles will be stuck with him going forward.
If Huff's role continues to be small, his trade value will diminish, making it harder to move to him. The Eagles may have missed a real opportunity at the trade deadline.
