Eagles' Vic Fangio Inside Patrick Mahomes' Head Before Super Bowl
By Cem Yolbulan
One of the unsung heroes of the Eagles' Super Bowl run this season has been defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Taking over a mess of a defensive unit from the year prior, Fangio turned the Eagles into one of the best defenses in the NFL. Now, he has a chance to win the first Lombardi Trophy of his career.
Even though a Super Bowl win has eluded Fangio throughout his illustrious career, he has managed to earn the respect of players and coaches from all over the league. Patrick Mahomes, speaking to the media on Tuesday, called Fangio one of the best defensive coordinators in the game and said he expects the Eagles to have a completely different game plan defensively on Sunday.

Mahomes added that he wants to play against the best and that is why he is looking forward to meeting Fangio. The fact that the Eagles will change things up and give him a different look is what "makes [Fangio] great."
This is a big opportunity for Fangio to get one over Mahomes. Throughout his career as a head coach or a defensive coordinator, the experienced coach has never been able to beat Mahomes. In eight games, including the Super Bowl 57 when he was a consultant with the Eagles, Fangio is 0-8 against the Chiefs quarterback.
In Fangio's defense, a lot of these matchups came when he was with the Broncos and the Dolphins, in games his team wasn't favored. Even though he hasn't been able to beat Mahomes, he clearly has his respect.
The Eagles have allowed the fewest yards and the second-fewest points in the NFL this season. They rank near the top in all defensive metrics and easily had the best defensive grade for the season per Pro Football Focus. It is arguably the best opportunity for Fangio to defeat Mahomes and the Chiefs star seems to be aware of that possibility.
