Eagles Veteran All But Confirms 2025 Season is His Last
By Jovan Alford
Before the Philadelphia Eagles took the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship game, veteran cornerback Darius Slay revealed to reporters that he was prepping for that game to be his last at Lincoln Financial Field.
Slay, who has spent the last five years in Philadelphia, also said he’s 85 percent leaning toward playing one more season, but it might not be with the Eagles. The 34-year-old cornerback won’t become an unrestricted free agent until 2026, but he has a potential out in his contract for 2025 and has a cap hit of $13.7 million.
Considering those financial factors, plus the Eagles going younger at cornerback with Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, you can understand why Slay said what he said.
Eagles' Darius Slay Announces Retirement Plans
On Wednesday, Slay spoke with the media ahead of Super Bowl 59 and mentioned he wants to play 13 years and then hang up the cleats.
“Next year will most likely be my last. I would love for it to be with the Philadelphia Eagles,” the veteran cornerback said (h/t Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post).
If the Eagles can restructure Slay’s final year on his contract as they’ve done with other players, there’s a chance he will stay an Eagle in 2025. However, the Eagles have a couple of huge FA priorities that they need to handle as well.
The 34-year-old Slay has not missed a step in Vic Fangio’s scheme this season. The veteran defensive back had 49 combined tackles, 13 pass deflections, three tackles for loss, and a forced fumble during the regular season.
He also had an outstanding 54.7 completion percentage allowed on targets (second-best of his career) and an 81.9 pass rating allowed when targeted. Slay has carried over his tremendous regular season play into the postseason.
Through Philadelphia’s first three playoff games, Slay has 12 combined tackles, five pass deflections, and an interception. The veteran defender also has a 57.1 completion percentage allowed on targets and a 90.5 pass rating allowed when targeted.
Slay has been the CB1 over the years that Eagles fans have wanted and they hope he has one more good game left if this is his last time in midnight green.
