Eagles Trade Candidate Destroys Value With Another Terrible Performance in Week 9
By Jovan Alford
Philadelphia Eagles veteran defensive back Avonte Maddox has seen his snaps decrease since the Eagles came back from their Week 5 bye.
Maddox was the full-time starter at slot corner, playing 90 percent of defensive snaps in three out of four games. However, after the bye, the veteran has played 20 total defensive snaps in the Eagles’ last three games heading into Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio decided to turn to rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean, who has played outstanding in the slot over the last few weeks. On Sunday, Maddox got on the field in a crucial spot in the fourth quarter.
However, the veteran cornerback struggled as he was called for a defensive pass interference on 3rd and 10, giving the Jags a fresh set of downs. Luckily for the Eagles, that penalty didn’t hurt them as linebacker Nakobe Dean had the game-sealing interception inside the end zone.
Eagles fans weren’t happy with the call as the refs threw the flag late. At the same time, fans weren’t pleased with Maddox. Surprisingly, that was the only snap Maddox received in Sunday’s game.
If there’s a trade to be made by Tuesday’s deadline, it could be in the secondary as Maddox has struggled mightily. If Maddox hadn’t seen his snaps decrease over the last month, he could’ve been a potential trade candidate.
However, it’s hard to envision the Eagles getting anything significant in a trade for the veteran defensive back. The Eagles re-signed Maddox this offseason to a one-year deal after releasing him in March to free up some cap space.
If the Eagles make any moves at the trade deadline, they’ll likely have to use draft capital as they don’t have good candidates to move (e.g. Maddox and James Bradberry).
