The Philadelphia Eagles have four wide receivers on their roster who were selected in either the first or second round of their respective drafts.
When you have names like A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, and John Metchie III on the depth chart, there are only so many spots that will be available. Those four are likely to take up much of the space in the WR room.
That doesn't mean Philadelphia's front office won't look to make meaningful upgrades at every position on the roster, including wideout, in the coming days after final cuts across the league are made by the Aug. 26 deadline.
Should the Eagles look to add another veteran receiver to the roster, one they have ties to, going back to the 2023 draft, has become available.
Eagles May Be Tempted to Scoop Up Just-Released WR Rakim Jarrett
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released veteran wide receiver Rakim Jarrett on Monday after the former UDFA out of the University of Maryland spent two seasons on the roster. The former top college prospect has a unique tie to the Eagles already, as Philadelphia was set to take the WR in the seventh round of the 2023 draft before Jarrett explained he had already agreed to an UDFA deal with Tampa Bay.
After 20 games with the Buccaneers over two seasons, Jarrett was released after reeling in 13 of 20 targets for 184 yards. Now, he is looking for his next home in the NFL, and that could be enough to tempt Philadelphia's front office into seeing what it would take to add the former Big 10 standout to the fold once again.
Jarrett's primary focus in 2023 was landing with a team that provided him the best chance at cracking the 53-man final roster. He accomplished just that in Tampa for two seasons. Now, Jarrett can prioritize more than just getting his foot in the door at the NFL level. Being part of a winner should be one of the things at the top of his wishlist. Philadelphia can offer him that, if they choose to do so.
We'll find out soon enough just how much Howie Roseman values the other wide receivers he has on the roster beyond the four mentioned above. If he isn't sold on them as depth pieces further down the depth chart, perhaps Jarrett receives a phone call.
