The Philadelphia Eagles were lucky enough to watch Jihaad Campbell fall all the way to the bottom of the first round and to the defending Super Bowl champs. Campbell had an argument as a top pick in the first half of round one. The ability to man the middle of the field and nose for the football made a clear case of the impact the former Alabama linebacker might have.
However, it seems that this impact is a bit higher than expected, with Campbell's intensity levels needing to calm down early on in camp. It is a sign of care, but also one of inexperience.
Campbell's level of aggression through the whistle is typical of a defender who played under Nick Saban. The intensity taught at the lower level is a piece of what often helps Tide players make the leap to the next level. It isn't as if the linebacker is doing anything wrong or showing traits that cannot be fixed. A level of intensity is expected and welcomed in a violent sport. The problem is understanding the dangers of friendly fire and being able to harness and control it to work in Philly's favor.
Eagles Rookie Linebacker Jihaad Campbell Must Take a Step Back
Ben VanSumeren is heading inside. Went to the ground while trying to block Jihaad Campbell on a running play. Something to monitor — BVS is top fullback option on roster.

Already Campbell's intensity has resulted in a notable injury with an important blocker having to leave the field after tangling with the linebacker. It is an example of why players need to be able to control when they put the foot on the gas pedal and understand what is best for the team. Campbell's energy and aggression are only helpful if they are inspiring the same in others. Sparking camp fights or causing injuries obviously doesn't fall under this umbrella. The rookie defender needs to take a step back and understand it isn't time to bring this level of aggression.
Philly has an incredibly physical defense that Campbell will have zero problems fitting in with. Still, the rookie must understand that now isn't the time to display this level of physicality. Camp reps are about learning to take the contact and getting on the same page as teammates. Avoiding injuries and getting new additions up to speed is the most important aspect.
These things can easily be accomplished without Campbell having his foot to the floor. Something the rookie must quickly learn with his approach already making waves in camp. It is time to take a step back and change his approach.
