The Philadelphia Eagles have not been shy about making trades to bolster their 53-man roster ahead of Week 1 of the 2025 regular season.

Before their preseason opener, the Eagles made a move to bolster their CB2 depth, acquiring Jakorian Bennett from the Las Vegas Raiders. The Eagles hope Bennett will create competition and possibly win the CB2 job.

And now, Philadelphia has made another trade, this time to address its wide receiver depth following its second preseason game on Saturday. On Sunday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Eagles acquired former second-round pick wide receiver John Metchie III from the Houston Texans.

Before the Eagles acquired Metchie, they reportedly weren’t the only NFC team trying to obtain his services, though.

Eagles Beat Out San Francisco 49ers to Acquire John Metchie III from Texans

According to Schultz, the San Francisco 49ers were the other squad trying to acquire the young wide receiver. However, the NFL insider adds that the Eagles made a better offer.

What was that offer? Well, ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime reports that the Eagles and Texans swapped Day 3 picks, with Philadelphia also giving up veteran tight end Harrison Bryant.

As we know, this isn’t the first time these two teams have made a trade. Earlier this offseason, Houston and Philadelphia linked up on the C.J. Gardner-Johnson trade, which saw Philly get former first-round pick Kenyon Green in return.

Now Metchie gets an opportunity for a fresh start, as he was viewed as a potential cut candidate in Houston. The former Alabama receiver will likely step in as a WR4 behind the likes of A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Jahan Dotson. Terrace Marshall Jr. once was the favorite for that job, but his knee injury earlier in camp put a halt on his rise up the depth chart.

Dotson is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025 season, along with Metchie. That said, Metchie has a chance to change the narrative about himself as he will reunite with Smith and Landon Dickerson.

Over his two-year NFL career, Metchie has racked up 40 receptions (67 targets) for 412 yards and a touchdown. Last season in Houston, the young wideout had 24 receptions (37 targets) for 254 yards and a score across 13 games.
