Eagles Release Veteran WR to Clear Space for Playoffs
By Jovan Alford
The Philadelphia Eagles made a minor roster change on Tuesday as they prepare to face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.
According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Eagles released veteran wide receiver John Ross from the practice squad and signed fullback Khari Blasingame to take his spot. Ross wasn’t the only wide receiver cut this week as the team waived Parris Campbell on Monday.
With Ross released on Tuesday, the Eagles only have one wide receiver on the practice squad (Danny Gray). Therefore, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Campbell potentially re-signed after he clears waivers.
As for Blasingame, he could be elevated from the practice squad immediately as the Eagles lost their fullback/linebacker Ben VanSumeren to a season-ending injury he suffered at practice last week.
The Eagles featured VanSumeren on offense a little bit this season as a lead blocker for star running back Saquon Barkley. The 24-year-old VanSumeren played 22 offensive snaps.
In last week’s win over the Baltimore Ravens, the Eagles had backup tight end Grant Calcaterra lined up at fullback for a few snaps. However, with Dallas Goedert banged up, Calcaterra might be starting at TE, opening the opportunity for Blasingame.
The Chicago Bears released Blasingame in late October after he spent three years in the Windy City. However, the Bears didn’t use him often this season, as he only appeared in two games after playing in 32 games in the 2022 and ‘23 seasons.
The Eagles will try to utilize all his practice squad elevations (3) before officially signing him to the 53-man roster.
