Eagles Offseason Addition an Undeniable Bust as Role Craters in Week 9
By Joe Summers
The Eagles' largest offseason signing has largely blew up in the franchise's face. After Week 9's narrow victory of the Jaguars, DE Bryce Huff's status on the team has never been more in question.
He was held out in each of the defense's first four possessions, with respected local reporter Jeff McClane asserting his absence was not injury related.
After Huff played only 40% of the snaps last week, perhaps his benching was preordained. Regardless, it's a bad look for a player who just signed a three-year, $51 million deal this offseason.
Eagles Seemingly Bench DE Bryce Huff in Week 9 vs. Jaguars
Philadelphia jumped out to a massive early lead before Jacksonville slowly climbed its way back. The Eagles ultimately won, though Huff's usage implies he doesn't have a bonafide role moving forward.
Huff has been disappointing in his first year with the organization, notching just eight tackles and 1.5 sacks in seven games. Given his large contract, this could represent a large miss for one of the best front offices in the NFL.
He still displayed the pass-rushing prowess that made him such a talented defensive lineman. During his time with the Jets after being an undrafted free agent, Huff notched 17.5 sacks during four years with New York.
Philadelphia justifiably sacrificed a significant amount of payroll to acquire Huff. He had the potential but has yet to deliver on that promise. This has to be a wake-up call or the Eagles will move on.
The trade deadline is less than 36 hours away. Either Huff proves himself to the front office or he'll be shipped off. No matter how you look at it, his signing has been among the bigger regrets in Howie Roseman's tenure.
