Eagles Named Possible Suitor for Star Who'd Transform Their Defense
By Joe Summers
The Eagles are rolling with one of the NFC's best records but it's never too soon for general manager Howie Roseman to start thinking about improvements in the offseason. Linebacker has been a consistent issue for the team and one star free agent would be the perfect target.
49ers LB Dre Greenlaw hasn't played yet this season though he is a proven leader, routinely setting the tone for one of the league's premier defenses.
If San Francisco doesn't want to pay Greenlaw his asking price, Roseman should make him a priority addition.
49ers LB Dre Greenlaw Named Target for Eagles in Offseason
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report ranked Greenlaw as the 11th-best upcoming free agent, noting that the Eagles are a possible fit. He has consecutive seasons with over 120 tackles and excels both as a run-stopper and cover man.
"Greenlaw should be valued as a defensive centerpiece who can provide playmaking ability and veteran leadership," Knox writes. "How he performs upon his return this year—assuming he does—will determine just how valued he'll be."
That'll be the major question for the 49ers. They'll have an opportunity to pay Greenlaw if they want, though it largely depends on how explosive he is after the Achilles injury he suffered in the Super Bowl.
"The Eagles will probably also be in on Greenlaw if he becomes available," Knox continues. "Philadelphia put a lot of effort into rebuilding its defense this offseason but could still use a linebacker of Greenlaw's caliber."
This is a roster that doesn't have many holes. That said, linebacker is definitely one of them. Roseman successfully rebuilt the secondary last offseason and now, he needs a new centerpiece for the defense. Greenlaw could be that player and he'd instantly make the Eagles one of the favorites to win the NFC next year.
