It is obvious that the Philadelphia Eagles' offense could use a boost after back-to-back losses defined by an offense that completely folded at the end of the game. Philly GM Howie Roseman is no stranger to blockbuster deals and is expected to make a number of moves in the coming weeks. This includes exploring the possibility of adding Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku. Despite having Dallas Goedert already rostered, the Eagles have very little depth at the position. Grant Calcaterra is supposed to be the primary backup, but has played very poorly in the first weeks of the season.
Bringing in Njoku gives Jalen Hurts a huge target and a weapon that is going to help unlock a lot of possibilities for the Eagles' offense. This is a fit considering the fact that Cleveland is currently trading away veteran pieces, and Njoku's contract is expiring. Making it probable that Roseman would have to pay very little to land the star pass catcher. It also must be noted that rookie tight end Harold Fanin Jr. has left no question that Njoku no longer fits their timeline.
The Eagles Shouldn't Hesitate to Take Advantage of Cleveland's Poor Start Adding David Njoku
Bringing the veteran to the Philly offense gives you so many different lineup possibilities that will help Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith, and A.J. Brown be better set up. Njoku can be a walking mismatch in goal-line situations and further size to help set up the run gam. There simply isn't a downside to the tight end being added to the roster with an expiring contract from a team that is among the AFC bottom feeders.
While you can argue that Roseman should be focused on adding to the shaky secondary, the offense needs a shot of life as well. Bringing in Njoku could prove to be the elusive final piece to help things click for a group that simply isn't living up to expectations. There are still flashes of last year's domination, but simply not the level of consistency needed when the games have mattered most over the last two weeks.
Njoku has only 195 receiving yards this season, but has quickly begun to play second fiddle to his rookie counterpart and is dealing with a bad offense that doesn't do a great job taking advantage of his size. Philly should at least explore the move, understanding that the two-game losing streak demands a sense of urgency.
Falling behind the Detroit Lions in the NFC playoff picture is far from ideal and should cause at least a handful of coaching and front office decisions. These should include adding Njoku in what will be the final year of what has been an underrated contract.
