Eagles Must Find Way to Wake Up Quiet Star Against Commanders
By Jovan Alford
The Philadelphia Eagles are one win away from their second Super Bowl appearance in the last three years after defeating the Los Angeles Rams, 28-22 in the divisional round on Sunday.
The No. 2 seed Eagles will host the NFC Championship Game next week and play the No. 6 seed Washington Commanders for the right to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. It will be the third time this season that these two division rivals will have played each other.
The two NFC East foes split the two-game regular season series, with each team winning a game at home. The Eagles, who have been terrific at home this season, would love to get one more win in front of their home crowd.
However, it won’t be easy as the Commanders are playing their best football at the right time after grabbing an impressive 45-31 win over the Detroit Lions in the divisional round.
The Eagles’ offense should be able to move the ball against the Commanders’ defense, which they’ve done in the regular season with superstar running back Saquon Barkley. However, they must find a way to get star wide receiver A.J. Brown going in the passing game.
In the wild-card round against the Green Bay Packers, Brown had one reception (three targets) for 10 yards. After only three targets, Eagles QB Jalen Hurts made a concerted effort to get the ball to his veteran receiver.
However, Brown only mustered two receptions (seven targets) for 14 yards, which included two key drops in snowy conditions. While Brown’s performance and the rest of the Eagles’ passing game have been lackluster to start the postseason, they have a great opportunity to get Brown going against the Commanders.
In the two regular-season games against the Commanders, Brown had five receptions (eight targets) for 65 yards and eight receptions (15 targets) for 97 yards and a touchdown.
In the second matchup against Washington, Brown went up against Marshon Lattimore and held his own, which is a good sign for Eagles fans.
Philadelphia’s passing game hasn’t played up to standard thus far in the preseason. However, if they can wake up Brown by getting him involved early and hitting him on a couple of slants and short routes, it could make a huge difference in the result.
