It doesn't come as a surprise that the Philadelphia Eagles have been pointed to as a potential landing spot for corner Riq Woolen. It seems increasingly likely that the Seattle Seahawks' corner is going to be dealt with, ESPN listing it as a 50% chance and listing Philly as one of four ideal landing spots. None is surprising, and a trade is on the table considering the struggles of Kelee Ringo and Adoree' Jackson. The Philly defense is badly in need of a third corner it can rely on, setting the stage for speculation on a Woolen trade.

However, there is a far clearer path for GM Howie Roseman, who is noted for his ability to find surprise bargains. The Eagles should hold off on spending any assets and instead opt to sign the top remaining free agent in the corner, Asante Samuel Jr. The 25-year-old defensive back is nearing his expected return after undergoing offseason neck surgery. It appears that Samuel was waiting to become healthy and better gauge his options for landing spots once the landscape of the 2025 season began to clarify.

Eagles Should Avoid Blockbuster Moves at Corner, Opting to Sign Surprise Free Agent

Making the move all the more interesting is the fact that Samuel Jr. watched his father play for the franchise from 2008-2011 as a key piece of the Philly secondary. Having this emotional tie could work to Philly's advantage as well when it comes to the potential signing. It is worth exploring over the Woolen trade based simply on the fact that it comes with less risk and just as much upside.

Even as Samuel Jr. plays his way back into shape, it is hard to believe the defensive back isn't an upgrade over Ringo or Jackson. Both have been clear liabilities over the last weeks of the season and demand a move. This is the reason why the Eagles have been attached to Woolen even with the season going as planned.

For Woolen, a trade makes sense based on the lack of fit in the current defensive scheme and approaching a contract year. This clarifies why the Eagles should avoid the potential trade in favor of signing Samuel Jr.

There is a reason why the Seahawks are sitting atop their division and still willing to trade the corner away. Even in a different scheme, there are concerns about Woolen's performance in Philly and if it would truly prove to be the missing piece. The safer move is to look to free agency to sign Samuel Jr. and keep an eye on lesser names in the trade market.

It gives you the highest potential upside with the lowest risk. Being able to easily move on from the deal if needed, while having the chance to find a long term contributor to an exciting young defense. No question, this is the path the Eagles must choose over the next two weeks of the season.
