Eagles' Mistake Just Helped the Commanders Pull Off Huge Trade
By Jovan Alford
With the NFL trade deadline only hours away, the Philadelphia Eagles have seen the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders be active in making upgrades to their roster.
The Cowboys acquired second-year wide receiver Jonathan Mingo from the Carolina Panthers, which was puzzling given that Dallas gave up a 2025 fourth-round pick. However, the Eagles fans aren’t worried about the Cowboys' move.
They are interested in what the Commanders did on Tuesday as they acquired four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Washington gave up a third-round pick, a fourth-round pick, and a sixth-round pick to the Saints for Lattimore and a fifth-round pick.
This is a massive trade for Commanders as they used a considerable amount of 2025 draft capital to acquire the star cornerback. However, the Eagles played a part in this trade.
Zach Berman of PHLY pointed out Washington has an extra third-round pick from the Eagles from the Jahan Dotson trade.
For fans who don’t remember the trade details, the Commanders traded Dotson and a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Eagles for a 2025 third-round pick and two seventh-round picks.
The Eagles haven't reaped those rewards from the Dotson trade yet, but the young wide receiver did have an incredible catch in last week's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
At the same time, the Eagles didn’t know Washington would use that third-round pick to get a quality starting cornerback. It shows how trades can have long-term ramifications and can help facilitate a larger deal.
