To kick off Day 2 of free agency, the Philadelphia Eagles made a baffling trade that will once again impact the defense but could also foreshadow a potential move on offense.
According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Philadelphia traded safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Houston Texans for guard Kenyon Green and a 2026 fifth-round pick.
Eagles fans are shocked to see the team move on Gardner-Johnson, especially with how the defense turned around in 2024 with him back on the roster. However, the most interesting move is getting Kenyon Green back in the trade, which could signal that Becton might not re-sign with the team.
Becton is considered one of the better offensive linemen in free agency and is due for a hefty pay raise after making the surprising move from tackle to right guard. If the Eagles lose Becton, Tyler Steen could step in at right guard next season.
However, the Eagles likely wanted more depth at the guard spot with Green. But Green hasn’t been able to find his footing in the NFL after being selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
The 23-year-old lineman was graded as one of the worst guards in the NFL in 2024. According to PFF, Green had a 39.7 pass block and 44.6 run block grades, which were the worst on the Texans last season.
His overall grade was 38.6. That was a slight improvement from his rookie season (37.7). This past season, the former first-round pick allowed five sacks and was penalized seven times in 582 offensive snaps.
That said, if there’s a team that can fix Green and get him back on track, it's the Eagles, as they turned around Becton’s career. Nonetheless, with everything that happened on the first day of free agency, Eagles fans wonder what direction Howie Roseman is taking with this roster going forward.
