The Philadelphia Eagles had to make some changes to their roster this offseason. That comes with the territory of winning a Super Bowl. The Eagles decided to let some players walk in free agency, and one of those guys was guard Mekhi Becton.
He joined the Los Angeles Chargers on a two-year, $20 million deal, and eight games into his tenure there, it looks like the Eagles made the right decision to let him go.
Former Eagle Mekhi Becton Has Struggled in 2025 with Chargers
The Chargers matched up against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night and in the process, Becton left the game with a knee injury and got replaced by Foster Sarell.
It takes just one search of Becton's name on X and you'll see how LA fans are viewing him right now. And it isn't positive to say the least. Although he has been active for every game this season, he has frequently left several games due to injuries. He missed Week 4 with a concussion and then suffered a hand injury that forced him to wear a club.
Injuries aren't new for Becton. During his time with the Jets, he suffered a torn MCL and then a fractured kneecap that ended his 2023 season. He then joined Philadelphia on a prove-it deal and made the move to guard.
That was easily his best season in the NFL, posting a 75.3 overall grade (21st among 136 graded guards), 64.2 pass-blocking grade (56th among 136 graded guards), and a 74.7 run-blocking grade (19th among 136 graded guards) on Pro Football Focus. He also allowed two QB hits and three sacks.
Fast forward to this year with the Chargers, and his play has taken a dip. Becton owns a 41.4 overall grade (76th among 81 graded guards), 49.6 pass-blocking grade (66th among 81 graded guards), and a 40.4 run-blocking grade (76th among 81 graded guards). He's already committed four penalties and has given up 12 pressures.
Meanwhile, Tyler Steen has replaced Becton at guard and has held his own thus far with a 64.2 overall grade, 72.8 pass-blocking grade, and 58.8 run-blocking grade. His pass-blocking grade is the 11th-best among guards this season. Even though the Eagles' offensive line hasn't been as stout as it has been in the past, they are certainly a better unit without Becton, considering what he's put on tape thus far.
Philadelphia was able to get the best out of Becton, but it has become clear they made the right choice to let him go during free agency.
