The Philadelphia Eagles game started in incredibly frustrating fashion with Jalen Carter getting tossed before ever playing a snap. Dak Prescott and Carter exchanged words, with Prescott spitting in Carter's direction, leading to the star defender walking about to the quarterback and returning the favor in idiotic fashion. It doesn't matter what Prescott said or who started it; spitting on another player in front of an official is the height of stupidity and could've easily cost the Eagles the game.
Not only this, but it puts your future in question despite the league's lack of history when it comes to suspending players for the action. Still, on opening night with the world watching, there is a level of fear that the league decides to make an example of Carter. Something that Philly fans can't blame the league for if it happens. NFL insider Mike Garafolo reported that while the league will review the footage, it is believed that fines are incoming and not a suspension.
Eagles Defensive Star Jalen Carter Appears Unlikely to Face Suspension After Missing Game 1
It will be interesting to see if the league deems Prescott's actions as instigating the altercation or if Carter alone faces punishment. There is no denying that it appears the Dallas quarterback is to blame for starting what would get Philly's best defender tossed from the game. However, if you're the Eagles coaching staff, that is zero excuse for the player's actions. If Carter felt disrespected, there are a million ways to handle it that don't involve walking up and spitting on the quarterback on a national broadcast.
The way to handle it was to meet Prescott's energy by wrecking the game and being the force Carter has proven himself to be throughout his career. Choosing to respond how he did was selfish and put the Eagles in harm's way. It showed up in the first half with Vic Fangio's unit looking obviously shaken and unable to slow down Dallas in either phase of the game. While there were great second-half adjustments, it was obvious Carter was still missed.
Something that it appears won't happen again, with the league likely to fine the defender and make it clear that this won't be tolerated. Already, Carter missed a full game and has been the target of endless criticisms. Add in the Philly coaching staff, and there is zero doubt the defender understands the gravity of his actions.
Thankfully, it seems a suspension isn't headed Carter's way, giving the Eagles their best defender ahead of a pivotal matchup. Philly will now travel to Arrowhead to take on the defending AFC champs in a Super Bowl rematch. If the Eagles' defense has a chance of slowing Patrick Mahomes in regular-season action, it is going to need Carter wreaking havoc in the middle.
No question, the star has every reason to be motivated and locked in after the Week 1 debacle. Eagles fans can only hope it serves as a springboard for the rest of the season for the incredibly talented pass rusher.
