The Philadelphia Eagles are preparing for their Week 7 clash against the Minnesota Vikings after back-to-back disappointing losses. There has been a ton of soul-searching in Philadelphia as head coach Nick Sirianni, offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, and the players are looking for ways to fix their struggling offense. The need for changes is obvious, and the Eagles may be preparing for them with their latest roster moves on Tuesday.
Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Tuesday that the Eagles were releasing WR Javon Baker and RB Audric Estime from their practice squad. This opens up two spots on the practice squad, suggesting that more moves are incoming in the next few days.
Eagles Cut WR Javon Baker Ahead of Week 7
This is a disappointing development for Baker, whose NFL career isn't off to the start he had envisioned when he became a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft. Before his rookie campaign, he teased big things for himself, saying that his game makes "people in wheelchairs stand up." So far, that couldn't have been farther from the truth. The former UCF standout only appeared in 11 games as a rookie for the Patriots, recording one catch for 12 yards.
The slow start eventually led to his release by New England before the 2025 campaign. After clearing waivers, Baker signed with the Eagles' practice squad. It has been a month and a half since then, and Baker has been invisible, not sniffing the active roster through six weeks.
The 23-year-old has the big build and physical frame that allows him to make catches in traffic. Combine that with his speed, athleticism, and strength, and one can see why the teams were intrigued by his potential heading into the draft. So far, he hasn't been able to show any of that potential in the NFL, but he will likely get more practice squad chances thanks to his perceived upside.
For the Eagles, how they will use the newly opened spots remains to be seen.
With Quez Watkins, Terrace Marshall, and Britain Covey already on the practice squad, it seems unlikely that they would bring in another wide receiver. Where they are lacking in depth is on the defensive side of the ball, specifically the pass rush and the cornerback rotation. The fact that they waived two offensive players, however, could signal different plans than what Eagles fans have in mind.
