A rare stain on an incredibly savvy Philadelphia Eagles front office was the signing of veteran pass rusher Bryce Huff. Paying players in free agency after a career-best is always a risky move. This isn't to say it never works, rather, there is a healthy level of risk involved in paying a player at their absolute peak. This is what the Eagles found out the hard way with their decision to sign Huff.
While it was an awful signing, the Eagles are coming off a Super Bowl win. It is hard to be mad at the team's biggest whiff after accomplishing the ultimate goal. Still, if the Eagles want to defend their title, they must explore every possible avenue to improve. This means searching for any way out of Huff's deal and making room for superior options on the team's depth chart.
Eagles Must Explore Moving on From Struggling Pass Rusher Bryce Huff
Already, we've seen the Eagles move past another failing defender who wasn't a part of a bright future. Right now, the team is in a very elusive window that must be taken full advantage of. This means showing far less patience with failing players and not hesitating to pivot when something isn't working as expected.
Philly should at least see if there is any type of trade market for the pass rusher. Considering the league's desperation for capable pass rushers and Huff's great season with the Jets, it is at least possible. Even cutting the veteran to make room for another piece with higher upside should be considered.
This is less about the cap concerns for Philly and more about clearing the way to continue to improve. The Eagles' defense was incredible down the stretch and had a defining performance against Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl. One that left many declaring the quarterback out of the GOAT debate.
All of this is to point out that the Eagles' defense is going to need to continue to play at this level for the franchise to have a chance to repeat. Huff simply doesn't factor into this picture and should be moved out of the way in favor of a pass rusher with higher upside. Even Howie Roseman is human, and this signing proves it.
