The Philadelphia Eagles have lost three games in a row. Jalen Hurts had probably the worst performance of his career, and Kevin Patullo's play-calling woes were an issue from the beginning again. Even so, this team still had a chance to win.
Vic Fangio's defense, while clearly not perfect, still gave this team a chance to take this game, in which the offense turned the ball over five times. Of course, it was only fitting that they ended with another pick to put the final nail in the coffin in OT. That has been the story of the season for Nick Sirianni's team, and it may end up costing him his defensive coordinator.
Vic Fangio Deserves Better, and He Might Get It Somewhere Else
Vic Fangio is one of the most respected defensive coordinators in the game. He also has previous head-coaching experience, and with multiple defensive-minded coaches being mentioned as potential candidates for multiple positions, it wouldn't be crazy to think that Fangio could also be on a team's short list.
Even if that's not the case, he would probably handpick his next team as a defensive coordinator, and there may not be that many incentives to stay in the City of Brotherly Love. He reportedly didn't have much of a say on defensive reinforcements, and with all the negativity surrounding the team and the way Nick Sirianni has failed to keep things under control and the dirty laundry inside the locker room, Fangio doesn't need to put up with that anymore.
The Eagles haven't scored at least 22 points in five consecutive games coming out of the bye week, and they're 2-3 during that span with three consecutive losses. The only games they won were the games in which they held their opponents to seven and nine points, respectively. Otherwise, they would be 0-5 and 6-7 at this point in the season.
While the defense is giving up 20.8 points per game, placing them firmly in the top third of NFL teams, the offense has scored just 22.2 points per game, which is good for 19th. That's just unsustainable for a team that was supposed to compete for another Super Bowl.
Fangio has been able to hide the team's flaws in the secondary more often than not. But after watching the general manager go after Jaire Alexander of all people, and after watching the offense hold the defense back weekly, he might not have many reasons left to be back in Philadelphia next season. It gives entirely too many negative memories of 2023, and that simply cannot be a rewarding feeling for Fangio.
